Can a 13 year old volunteer at a nursing home?
March 21st, 2009 | by nursing |Selena Maria asked:
I’d really love to volunteer at a nursing home, but I’m not sure if I’m old enough. If not, what other places can I volunteer at?
My dad works at a nursing home. Could I volunteer where he works?

Oh, I think you are old enough for some type of volunteering there. Sometimes they just like people to keep the folk at the nursing home company.

you might be a little bit too young but you can always ask them. i think they would love to have a young person there to keep them company.
because your dad works there, then i think it should be fine.
but it might not work out like that.
good luck!

The decision is up to nursing home,…but i believe you can. You may not be able to help nurses with their work or do anything that staff would normally do… but im sure you can vist. Just being there to listen and visit with someone much more wise is worth it. You can,…jus find one and express to them what you wanna do and im sure you’ll be on your way to being a volunteer

You can entertain them and keep them company, but that really is the best thing you can do. If you just check what their policies are, you might be able to do more. Just take it slow, and wait for the employees to trust you, and don’t be impatient. Hopefully all will go well. Oh, you probably will get a small job because people who would normally work there would get paid, so you would have a good chance. If all else fails, you could also go to an animal shelter. They always need help. You are very good for trying to help out.

OF COURSE! Its never to early to start volunteering! Its said but a lot of people in nursing homes dont get a lot of visitors so just being there to play checkers would make someones day a 1000 times better! Make sure you call around so as not to disturb there routne

You could ask your dad and see what the volunteer coordinator thinks. I’ve never seen children volunteer at a nursing home though… only in groups to perform, etc.
I know where I used to be, the volunteer coordinator requires that volunteers be at least 16 years of age, for fear that those younger wouldn’t be mature/sensitive in the environment. She also required long-term commitments for new volunteers. It is discriminatory (the age part, mostly), but there is some wisdom to be found there. That’s not to say that all adults could manage in this setting.
