How do I volunteer at the animal shelter and nursing home?

November 1st, 2009 | by nursing |
That girl asked:

How do I volunteer to work at the local animal shelter and a nursing home. I can’t find their websites at all. I’m 15 and don’t know if I’m even old enough to volunteer at these places. If I just call them what would I say?
Thanks!!

If you call them just ask them if they are accepting volunteers at this time and that you would be interested in helping out for so many hours a week and they’ll either tell you yes or no and i know they both need help as the nursing home are having shortages all over and the animal shelter always needs help.

If you go to your county’s website (mine is arlingtonva.gov) they may have links to volunteer programs.

You can also contact the Humane Society and see if they have a program in your area.

As for nursing homes, that’s an old-fashioned term that sounds kind of sad. Ithink you’ll find them under “assisted living” or “senior living: and those kinds of terms.

I think its awesome that you’re doing that. Its not easy to help out in weither of those venues, but it will really help you build character and will look really awesome on job applications and college applications, because they’ll know you are tough and kind :)
Call and say “Hi, I’m____. I’m 15 and I’m interested in volunteering, who should I speak with about that?”

    Good luck :)
