Will onion or garlic powder in food consumed by a nursing mother affect the baby like using real garlic?
March 4th, 2009 | by nursing |texpick48 asked:
My daughter has been told that she can’t eat any food prepared with garlic/onions in the recipe, becuase it will affect the nursing child, ie give the baby an upset tummy. Seems to me like using onion/garlic powder would not have the same effect? She believes that the powder will have the same affect on my nursing grandson?

The powder is real , just ground up finely.
personly, I would say the not eating onions and garlic would depind upon the individuals . as many”mexican” babies are eating onions garlic and pepers before being off the bottle. I have no knoledge of the orientals but I suppose they are started with the “normal” foods early too.

Maybe
but Garlic is good for you.
How old is the kid?

If it’s going to affect the baby, it will no matter what form you’re using it in.
However, different foods affect different babies. My daughter I couldn’t eat anything with a tomato base or garlic. With my son I couldn’t eat anything with dairy in it.
Who told her not to eat garlic or onions? A qualified lactation nurse would know better.

I agree with the poster above me. I doubt that your daughter actually needs to avoid garlic or onions.
Nursing mothers don’t need to avoid any food unless there is a severe reaction that can truly be “blamed” on a certain food. This is extremely rare.
She should talk to a qualified lactation consultant if she really feels she needs to avoid any foods.
