Hi,
Just wanted to ask all the nurses on this board what its actually like to be a nurse? What different jobs they do on a daily basis, the highs and lows, whether they enjoy thier job etc…?
I think i’ve definatly decided that i’d love to have a career in the nursing profession and at the moment i think i’d like to work in the NICU so i was just wondering how other nurses find thier jobs?
thank you x

Im a nursing student. Graduating this friday. I put in so many hours in different clinical settings. I absolutely loved working Labor and Delivery. It was the best. Although I was also given the opportunity to work the ER and I loved it even more.

I would say that patient care is the best. Having that hands on work with someone and knowing you made a difference to that person is the most rewarding feeling. I was given the opportunity to do my cinicals @ LAC-USC here in Los Angeles. It was the best experience ever. Good Luck with your nursing school experience. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I’ve been a nurse (RN) for twelve years; I spent my first year doing Med-Surg and learned SO much, but I didn’t really enjoy it much. Still, before going into any specialty area, I strongly recommend the med-surg experience first. You get exposed to lots of different specialties there also. It’s such exhausting work though, physically, mentally, emotionally. I’d go home at night so completely drained. But some of the nurses I worked with would be charged! So it depends on you. After that year, I transferred into obstetrics, which is my love. NICU is an amazing place to work. Those tiny, fragile babies need so much. And their parents feel so helpless. It’s rewarding I’m sure, as well as heart breaking from time to time. If you get there, please be an advocate for Kangaroo Care-it rocks. I wish you all the best.

I am an LPN (LVN). Whatever you do, DO NOT become an LPN. Get your RN–preferably a BSN degree. Hope you choose to join the sisterhood! Cheers!
