I am getting ready to enter nursing school and i was wondering if there was anything that i should prepare myself for. And also, are the clinicals where the real learning starts? Is that where you start to really understand?

    You need to know that you will be marketable anywhere you want to go. you don’t have to do your clinicals in a hospital. you can do them in a nursing home where you are really needed. nursing is more about paperwork management than patient care. but of course you have to have a love for helping people.!!! Good luck. we need more nurses!

    IMO, as tough as school is, and as much learning as you endure, the REAL learning starts when you have graduated and are working in your first job.

    Nursing school clinicals are really not much like real life nursing, at least mine weren’t! It’s a lot of observation interspersed with taking vital signs, giving meds, and doing your clinical paperwork.

    Some people synthesize the information and it comes together well for them in the classroom and get into clinicals and just can’t critically evaluate what is going on with their patients. There are some people who think the classroom stuff is far too overwhelming and they might do poorly on exams but you put them into clinical and they KNOW what they are doing and why they are doing it and it all makes perfect sense to them. Ideally, you want to be a blend of both, try to do well in the classroom and in clinicals, obviously. ;)
    The most important thing to know about nursing school is that it can be very overwhelming. Many of us cry more than once after a hard day.

    I remember going to my very first clinical of my nursing school career, it was in a nursing home, and having never worked as a CNA before it was a rude awakening. But moreso, I could not handle the environment, the geriatric population, the saddness and depression that engulfed the facility I was at. I went home and told my husband I wanted to quit school. Even though I knew I wanted to work as either a midwife or a neonatal nurse and would never have to work in a nursing home, I didn’t want to have to go through it even one more day in clinicals. I hated it so bad.

    But I went back. And I came home and cried after all 4 of those clinicals. It ******. And now I’m a labor nurse. I thank God every day for the wonderful nurses and aides that work in nursing homes, they are better people than I. But then, they probably cringe at the thought of working as a labor nurse.

    We all have our niche, that’s the great thing about nursing.
