How can I start to put my son to sleep with nursing?

My son is almost 17 months old. He’s still nursing and I just can NOT get him to sleep myself without nursing him. I really want to start putting him in his own bed and getting him down for naps and night time without having to nurse as I am starting the weaning process. I’m having a hard time and would like some helpful input if possible.
Thanks!

Tackle naps first. Give him a snack, then read him a book (or whatever you normally do), try to avoid sitting where you would normally nurse him, and put him in his crib. If he cries, pick him up and soothe him, and put him back down….depending on his will, this part may have to be repeated several times. At night, I just started brushing his teeth after he nursed, after about 2 nights of this, he stopped falling asleep while nursing and now when he is done nursing, he’ll reach for his toothbrush. Good luck!

I have to admit… this is on of my big downfalls. I’ve never really been able to do anything but wait out the stage. But I know there are things that you can try… This page has a few:

I’d also recommend the book: No cry sleep solution for Toddlers by Elizabeth Pantley

My nearest ’sucess’ story came from following a chapter in that book on the ‘nursing to sleep’ topic. It was still gentle and takes time… but cold turkey is never good for weaning and so it is the best way to get there! :)

I know just what you’re talking about, as I nursed my babies too.

This can be one use of a pacifier, for bedtime.

I used a teddy bear with a music box inside to lay down beside him.

Consider a short story book at bed time.

My child used to start crying if the words “nap” or “sleep” were used….so I was careful to say “this is rest time” My rule was simple. You don’t have to close your eyes, you just have to keep your head on the pillow and be quiet. Usually the child would fall asleep amid a pile of books or teddy bears.

My 15mo falls asleep on me without nursing (or fuss) if in a carrier (Ergo, sling, etc).
